THE STORY BEHIND OUR SUCCESS

In 2013, Matthys Beukes teamed up with Philip Buys to compete at the ABSA Cape Epic. They finished 7th overall in their first EPIC together, also winning the African jersey and raking in 2 stage podium finishes. This was the spark that started the fire that is the African Mountain Biking Team.

As the 2014 season began, so came the chance for Philip to compete in the EPIC with Swiss partner and World Champion, Nino Schurter. Matthys teamed up with up and coming and fellow South African national champ, Gert Heyns to ride as a backup team for Philip and Nino. Between the two Teams, they won three stages. They finished on the podium five times while also successfully defending their Red African Jersey. They placed 5th and 6th overall, respectively. Although they did not win the race, they still won the hearts of their fans and the public by winning the Grand Finale. Philip Buys also represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Philip became the African Continental Champion for the 3rd consecutive year. Philip represented South Africa at the world champs in Norway.
Ruan Lochner joins the team as General Manager and Head Mechanic.

During the 2015 season, Matthys and Philip teamed up to once again secure the Red Jersey for "African MTB Team" and also win stage 4 and finish 5th overall at the Cape Epic. We partnered with a bunch of new sponsors, allowing for additional growth and support structures to be set in place. Cementing our status as the number one MTB team in South Africa. We launched a program called the African Mountain Biking Academy, which created growth for riders such as Kombo Bere and current professional rider Pieter Du Toit.

2016 was another year of reliable results on the bike, it also came with a few trials and tribulations. With Matthys falling ill just before Cape Epic, we were forced to withdraw from the race. Later the year Matthys formed part of the team that secured the Sani2C victory. The next strike of misfortune for Matthys would come in September, where he had a severe crash, sustaining a broken shoulder, ankle and wrist. Philip shifted all his focus to the cross country format, intending to qualify for the 2016 Olympics that year, taking place in Rio. Philip complied with all of the criteria set out and became Continental champion once again, but unfortunately was not selected by the South African Cycling Federation to represent South Africa on the world stage.
